Biography
Anna Sul was born on August 2, 1873 in Galicia, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. On June 14, 1891 at the age of 17, she married Prokop Kondratiuk in Galicia. Anna and Prokop had three children born in Galicia: Anastazia in 1892, Pelagia in 1897 and Simeon in 1902. In the spring of 1906 they emigrated to Canada. They travelled on the SS Mount Temple from Antwerp to Montreal arriving on May 22, 1906. The ship’s passenger list gives Prokop’s occupation as farmer and the family’s destination as Rosthern, a farming community in Saskatchewan. Anna was about seven months pregnant during the journey and gave birth to their fourth child, Anna, in Winnipeg on August 14th.
Anna Sul died of coronary thrombosis three years later, on August 30, 1909, at Winnipeg General Hospital. She was 36 years old.
Research Notes
The name “Sul” is actually a guess at how Anna’s surname might be spelled in English. Her name in Cyrillic script, as it appears in the Bobowsky family bible is (approximately) Мϥц. When her daughter Anna Kondratiuk applied for a birth certificate in 1921 she gave her mother’s surname as Shul. When her daughter Pauline was married in 1914 she gave her mother’s name as Anna Sul Laborez. When Pauline registered the death of Sam Kondratiuk in 1924 she gave their mother’s surname as Czul.
